Since we first covered the Zelos Helmsman back in May of 2014, the brand has released five other models either via crowdfunding or directly on its website. Now, Zelos has returned to that foundational model, following up with the Helmsman 2. Clearly built on the DNA of the original, the Helmsman 2 refines the aesthetic, and the design and engineering elements Zelos has learned along the way have been carried over to this newest piece. The case is more cleanly executed, the dial and bezel are made more legible and the overall effect is just a better-looking watch.
The replica Helmsman 2 isn’t just a new dial slapped into the same case. While some of the original elements are still present, the new case is sleeker and more refined. It measures 42mm in diameter, 13.5mm thick, and 48mm lug-to-lug; this is actually smaller than the original which, which measured 44mm x 13.8mm x 52mm. The size is reasonable for a contemporary 300-meter dive watch, especially with the lug-to-lug distance. Equally as important are the ergonomic lines of the case, with the gentle sloping of the lugs ensuring a comfortable fit on the wrist.
The case itself will be available in either CUSN8 bronze or stainless steel. The case boasts a number of different finishes with the recessed sides sandblasted and accented with polished edges. The bezel is brushed and can actually be changed as it screws in (with the exception of the optional ceramic bezel). The crowns have been updated as well and are now a little longer with a taper.
All of these updates make for a stylish revision of the original Helmsman, which in itself was a solid watch. It’s cool to see a brand revisit an earlier design and take their additional experience and resources to give it an update. The Helmsman 2 is up for pre-order with prices ranging from $369 to $599 depending on your case material and dial material choice.
