We got our hands on the Oris Replica Divers Sixty-Five earlier this year at Basel World, and we loved it. The slim, 40 mm, vintage-inspired piece was well-received by both critics and readers alike – and we can’t blame them. Oris replica watches has a history of offering sizable utility watches, like the ProPilot with a mechanical altimeter, or the Aquis, whose depth gauge we tested in the Caribbean coral reefs – making this this new slim diver a welcome alternative to their conventional lineup.
The Divers Sixty-Five isn’t necessarily a purpose-built utility piece. It was water resistant to “only” 100 meters (more than enough for recreational desk-divers). It was a smaller, lighter, tool watch with a bit of pep to it. That pep comes from the fact that it’s a watch that, almost proudly, does less than its counterparts. This smug coolness stems from its solid design cues; a case design that stays faithful to that of its ’60s predecessor, and a dial design with spaciousness and legibility in mind.
This new blue version is a welcome alternative to the classic black dial that dominates not just Oris’ divers but all high end replica watches in this category. The new Divers Sixty-Five features a color scheme that was supposedly inspired by the up-market French Deauville trend of the 60s – a scene that I have witnessed only in black and white. However, I do know that Connery and Bardot met up in 60s Normandy prior to Si Don Juan Etait Une Femme, and after a bit of sifting through black & whites, I concluded that the area must really have inspired a palette of hoary blues and muted oranges.
Indeed, if we’re talking colors in Normandy, those same hues are the stuff of the cliffs of Étretat that Monet and Boudin painted in the century before our last. What I’m trying to say is this was a solid color choice by Oris if Normandy is what they were going for.
Inside the new Replica Oris Divers Sixty-Five beats the automatic Cal. 733, a modified Sellita SW200 that beats at 4Hz (28,000bph) for 38 hours. This is a reliable, workhorse of a movement that won’t break the bank. It fits perfectly within this watch.
Listed at CHF 1,750, this is a solid offering for just above $1,700. The new design cues are inspired by a rather cool era in which this slim, sporty nautical copy watches may very well have belonged.
